ROUNDABOUTS AT U.S. ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOLS, HIGH SCHOOLS, AND COLLEGES

Roundabouts at U.S. Schools and Colleges and the way they got there.. Below is a post by a volunteer group, TheCITYalliance, Sarasota, FL who organized a large number or responses to a request of those participating on the Kansas State University roundabout listserv for examples of high schools with roundabouts.....the following provides a list just circulated along with web addresses to view the sites.  With 300-400 new roundabouts each year (probably over 4,000 by the end of 2014) many more schools will have roundabouts, the "safety belt" intersection as part of the traffic circulation.   New roundabouts will serve approaches schools in LaGrange and Malta, N.Y. and Burlington, VT gets its first busy street roundabout in 2017 at the corner of Locust and Shelburne Streets where a large elementary school is located. ----------------------------------------- January 2, 2014 message posted on the Roundabout Research listserv by TheCityalliance

Thanks to all  who offered school sites.  An impressive roundabout list, updated today.   We are sending this list to school administrators hereabouts to add to our school board’s one example that just happened to be roadside of the roundabouts-in-series Honore Ave corridor, listed below as Fruitville Elementary.  My impression is that most of these were local initiatives – no state DOT involved.

Our advocacy team regards a school site roundabout as “training wheels” (a school word coming) teaching parents, new teen drivers, and children how well roundabouts work – a lesson that should reduce pushback and accidents elsewhere when signalization is changed out to this better safer alternative – whataconcept= taught new drivers and parents being roundabout advocates. Your emailed list of 19 high schools, 13 middle, 19 elementary, and 14 universities closes with this message:

To us, these and other modern roundabouts at schools show roundabouts can quickly unwind vehicle drop-off/pick-up back-up, are safer for parents and students walking to and from school, and deliver angst relief more safely and quickly to fans driving to and from football stadium parking areas.  The modern roundabouts record of safety and mobility benefits for schools encourage funding construction where feasible.
